Create a YuJa Recording in Blackboard

You can launch the YuJa video recorder directly from you Blackboard class. Please see the instructions below or view this video tutorial (but instead of Mashups, use the '+' menu) to learn how to access the YuJa-Blackboard plugin, record a video, and send it to your class.

  1. Log in to Blackboard, navigate to your Blackboard course, open the desired content area/folder.
  2. This step depends on your role in Blackboard:
    • Instructors: Use the top menu to select either: Build Content > YuJa Media Chooser -or- choose any other option that provides a text editor (such as Item, Assignment, Course Content, or Discussion Topic).
Blackboard instructor view: 'action' bar/menu at the top of the page.
    • Students: Find your assignment link, and click it to open the submission page. On that page, click the Write Submission button to open the text editor.
Blackboard student view: click video link to open the submission page.
  3. Make sure that the top menu is expanded; click the '...' (more...) icon to see all options. Click the '+' (add content) icon, to open a pop-up window.
You can find the 'Add Content' option in the top menu of Bb's Text Editor tool.
  4. In the pop-up menu, scroll down, and click YuJa Media Chooser to open the YuJa-Bb plugin.
The 'YuJa Media Chooser' option is available in the 'Add Content' pop-up menu.
  5. In the YuJa pop-up, use the Record button to record a new YuJa video -or- use the Browse menu to find and attach a video from your computer -or- scroll down to the Media section to select a YuJa video you already recorded.
Select a video attachment option in the pop-up menu.
  6. If you need to record a new video, click Record, and YuJa will ask to open the recording application on your computer. If you haven’t used YuJa before, you will need to download and install the application before you can record any videos. The pop-up should ask if you’re a first-time user, then it will prompt you to download and install. If you don’t see an option to download there, please follow these instructions to install YuJa on your computer, then follow the steps above to return to this point. After the application is installed, click Record, then select Open YuJa Software Capture from the pop-up menu. You can minimize this browser window for now.
In the pop-up menu, click 'Open YuJa Software Capture'.
  7. The YuJa recording software will now open. In the desktop application, you will need to configure your recording settings. First, give your recording a name and a description (optional), then use the menu on the left to select the inputs you want to use in your recording: webcam (under Video), microphone, and screen (if you need to include your computer’s screen in the recording). You can also turn any of these inputs off. You will see a preview of what will be included in the windows on the right. When you are done with the set up, click the red START button to begin recording. There will be a three second countdown before your recording will begin.
Name the recording and configure the desired inputs.
  8. After you click START, you may minimize the YuJa window and start doing your presentation. As you are recording, you will see your controls in the bottom-right corner of your screen. They will give you the option to pause or stop your recording, or open the YuJa Software Station in full preview mode. When you’re done with your presentation, you can maximize the YuJa window and click FINISH there -or- click the red square in the small YuJa menu in the bottom-right corner of your screen.
To stop recording, maximize the YuJa window and click 'Finish' -or- click the red square in the small YuJa menu in the bottom-right corner of your screen.
  9. When you stop recording, YuJa will prompt you to save or delete the file. Click SAVE, and the video will upload to your account's media folder. You may also have the option to POST NOW, which will share the video to whichever channel you selected in recording the set-up. Either way, YuJa will need to process the recording. You will receive an email when that is complete, and a second email when auto-captioning is done. This process may take several minutes depending on the size of the recording. After the video has been processed, it will be available in your YuJa media folder (and in the previously selected media channel, if you chose one).
NOTE: If you only used the SAVE option, the video hasn't been posted to Blackboard yet! You will need to do that manually (see the following steps).
Click 'SAVE' to upload your recording to your YuJa account's media folder.
  10. Maximize the browser window, or open a new window and navigate back to the text editor tool using steps 1-4. This time, don’t click Record. Instead, scroll down and look for the video you just recorded – it will appear in the Media section after it has finished processing (may take a moment to populate the list).
Look for the recording in the Media section.
  11. In the Media section, click on the desired video to select it (highlight it in blue). Then click Insert Videos.
The recording is selected (in blue) - click 'Insert Videos' to add it to the item in Blackboard.
  12. After inserting the video, you will be returned to the text editor page. The next step will depend on your role in Blackboard:
    • Instructors: A video thumbnail will appear in the text editor. It won't play there, but it will be functional once the item/assignment/etc is posted to your class. Confirm that the video was attached, add any additional content, check the availability settings, then click Submit to post it to Blackboard.
    • Students: You should see a link to your video in the text editor (highlighted in red below). The link won’t work for you now, but it will be functional for your instructor. Confirm that the link was created, then click Submit to send the video/assignment to your instructor.

  13. This step will also depend on your role in Blackboard:
    • Instructors: The YuJa video will appear in the course content area you selected.
    • Students: After you click submit, you should see a success message. The video link on this page is functional – you can try it out to confirm that the correct video was attached.
