Create a YuJa Recording in Blackboard

Summary

For instructors and students: How to launch the YuJa Software Capture application from within Blackboard, set up and create a recording, and share it in any Content Area, assignment, discussion board, or any other area with a text editor inside of your Blackboard course.

Body

You can launch the YuJa video recorder directly from your Blackboard class. Please see the instructions below or view this video tutorial (but instead of Mashups, use the '+' menu) to learn how to access the YuJa-Blackboard plugin, record a video, and send it to your class.

  1. Log in to Blackboard, navigate to your Blackboard course, open the desired content area/folder.

  2. Navigate to the area where you would like to add the YuJa recording. This step depends on your role in Blackboard:

    • If you are an Instructor or Teaching Assistant: Use the top menu to select either: Build Content > UND YuJa CIM Tool -or- choose any other option that provides a text editor (such as Item, Assignment, Course Content, or Discussion Topic). IMPORTANT: the CIM Tool will simply link the video. If you would like to embed the video, so it's visible/playable on your course page, choose the second option (like Item, Assignment, Course Content, or Discussion Topic). Then proceed to step 3.
Blackboard instructor view: 'action' bar/menu at the top of the page.

    • If you are a Student: Find your assignment link (1) and click it to open the submission page. On that page, click the Write Submission button (2) to open the text editor, and proceed to step 3.
Blackboard student view: click video link to open the submission page, then click 'Write Submission' to open the text editor/menu.

  3. In the Text Editor, click the '…' (ellipses) icon to expand the top menu, if needed. In the bottom row of icons, you will see a '+' (plus) icon. Click that, and a pop-up menu will appear.

  4. In the pop-up menu, scroll down and select UND YuJa CIM Tool (for instructors) or YuJa Media Chooser (for students).

  5. There are three options for adding a YuJa recording! In the YuJa pop-up menu, you can:
    • Choose Media - Scroll through your cloud folder on YuJa to select a video you already recorded.
    • Upload Media - View your computer's local storage, find a video file, and upload it to YuJa.
    • Record Content - Click to start recording a new YuJa video now.
Screenshot of YuJa: Select a video attachment option in the pop-up menu: 'Choose Media', 'Upload Media', or 'Record Content'.

  6. If you would like to record a new video, click Record Content. A menu will open where you can download the application (if this is your first time using YuJa) or start recording (if you have already installed the app). Click the desired option, and the YuJa recorder will install/launch on your computer.

Note: You may need to give permission for the YuJa app to open – it may take a moment to launch. You will see a pop-up window that says 'Authenticating your credentials. After the application opens, you can minimize your browser window.

  7. The YuJa recording software will now open as a desktop application. Before you start recording, you will need to configure the settings. First, give your recording a name (description is optional), then use the menu on the left to select the inputs you want to use in your recording:
  • Video - Choose a webcam and/or document cam. The input will be visible in the window under Video SourceI.
  • Audio - Select the correct microphone – many computers have more than one! After picking a device, please check the audio levels at the bottom of the screen under Mic Source to confirm. If you would like to include the sound produced by your computer, enable Mic Source - 2 and select Internal Audio from the corresponding drop-down menu. This may be used if you will be showing a video or audio clip during your presentation.
  • Screen - If you would like to include your computer’s screen in the recording, confirm that the correct area is selected here. YuJa can use one or multiple monitors, or you can select a specific area of the screen. The captured area will be visible under Screen, on the right.

If your computer has more than one device connected for any input type, you will need to choose which one(s) to use here. For regular recordings, you can also disable any of these inputs, but YuJa proctoring has minimum input requirements (webcam, screen, and mic). Check the preview windows on the right to confirm that the correct inputs are selected. When you are done with the setup, click the red START button to begin recording. There will be a three second countdown, then your recording will begin.

  1. After you click START, you may minimize the YuJa window and start your presentation. As you are recording, you will see your controls in the bottom-right corner of your screen. They will give you the option to pause or stop your recording, or you can open the YuJa Software Station window by clicking the YuJa icon.

When you’re done with your presentation, you can end the recording session two ways:
    1. YuJa Application - Maximize the YuJa Software Capture window and click FINISH.
    2. Mini Action Bar - Look for the controls in the bottom-right corner of your screen and click the red square.

To stop recording, maximize the YuJa window and click 'Finish' -or- click the red square in the small YuJa menu in the bottom-right corner of your screen.

  1. IMPORTANT: When you stop recording, YuJa will prompt you to save or delete the file. Click SAVE, and the video will upload to your account's media folder. You may also have the option to POST NOW, which will share the video to whichever channel you selected in recording the set-up. YuJa will begin to process the recording. You will receive an email when that is complete, and a second email when auto-captioning is done. This process may take several minutes depending on the size of the recording. After the video has been processed, it will be available in your YuJa media folder (and in the previously selected media channel, if you chose one).

NOTE: If you only used the SAVE option, the video hasn't been posted to Blackboard yet! You will need to do that manually using the next steps.
Click 'SAVE' to upload your recording to your YuJa account's media folder.

  2. To share the video you can copy/paste its URL into Blackboard (or anywhere you share web links) -or- you can add the video using Blackboard's YuJa tool (below). Maximize the previous browser window -or- open a new window and navigate back to the text editor tool using steps 1-4. This time, don’t click Record. Instead, scroll down and look for the video you just recorded – it will appear in the Media section after it has finished processing (may take a moment to populate the list).
In the Media section, click on the desired video to select it (this will highlight it in blue). Then click Insert Content.
YuJa screenshot (PC): Look for the recording in the Media section. The recording is selected (in blue) - click 'Insert Content' to add it to the item in Blackboard.

Note: If you are using a Mac, and you don't see the Insert Content button, make sure you're scrolling down using middle scroll bar. If it's not visible, hover over the area on the right edge of the window and scroll to make it appear -or- change your settings to always display scroll bars: Apple menu  > System Preferences > General > Show scroll bars > Always.
Screenshot of YuJa (Mac): select video(s) and click 'Insert Content'.
  3. After inserting the video, you will be returned to the text editor page.
Instructor (left) and student (right) views of the Bb text editor with a YuJa video attachment.

In the text editor, the next step will depend on your role in Blackboard:
    • Instructors: A video thumbnail will appear in the text editor. It won't play there, but it will be functional once the item/assignment/etc is posted to your class. Confirm that the video was attached, add any additional content, check the availability settings, then click Submit to post it to Blackboard.
    • Students: You should see a link to your video in the text editor (highlighted in red below). The link won’t work for you now, but it will be functional for your instructor. Confirm that the link was created, then click Submit to send the video/assignment to your instructor.

  4. After submission, the video's appearance/format will also depend on your role in Blackboard:
    • Instructors: The YuJa video will appear in the course content area you selected.
    • Students: After you click submit, you should see a success message. The video link on this page is functional – you can try it out to confirm that the correct video was attached.
