Summary
For instructors and students: How to launch the YuJa Software Capture application from within Blackboard, set up and create a recording, and share it in any Content Area, assignment, discussion board, or any other area with a text editor inside of your Blackboard course.
Body
Instructors and students can launch the YuJa video recorder directly from any Blackboard course site. Please see the instructions below to learn how to: access the YuJa-Blackboard plugin, record a video, and send it to your class.
- Log in to Blackboard, navigate to your Blackboard course, open the desired content area/folder.
- Navigate to the area where you would like to add the YuJa recording. This step depends on your role in Blackboard:
- If you are an Instructor or Teaching Assistant:
- Hover over the course content area to bring up the purple '+' button. Click that, then select 'Content Market'.
- On the 'Content Market' page, select either:
- UND YuJa - adds a link to the overall YuJa page. You can create a YuJa video from this page, but the link will not point to it directly.
- UND YuJa CIM Tool (recommended) - adds a link directly to a YuJa video. You may select an existing video, or create a new one at this time. IMPORTANT: the CIM Tool will simply link the video. If you would like to embed the video, so it's visible/playable on your course page, you must add it inside of any text editor box, using the '+' menu > Content Market.
- On the YuJa page, select 'Create Recording', then click 'Launch Software Capture' to open the YuJa recorder (or select 'Download', if you haven't previously downloaded the application). Please proceed to step 3, The YuJa Recorder, below to learn more about setting up and using the YuJa recorder.
- If you are a Student:
- Find your assignment link, and click it to open it.
- On the assignment submission page, locate the text editor box. In the top menu, click '+', then from the drop-down menu, select 'Content Market'.
- On the Content Market page, click on 'UND YuJa CIM Tool'.
- The YuJa Recorder - When the YuJa application first opens, you may need to approve access to your webcam, screen, etc. In the YuJa recorder's setup menu, select your recording settings. If your computer has more than one device connected for any input type, you will need to choose which one(s) to use here. For regular recordings, you can also disable any of these inputs. Check the preview windows on the right to confirm that the correct inputs are selected.
- Video - Choose a webcam and/or document cam. The input will be visible in the window to the right.
- Audio - Select the correct microphone – many computers have more than one. After picking a device, please check the audio levels using the meter on the right edge of the window to confirm. If you would like to include the sound produced by your computer, enable Mic Source - 2 and select YuJa Internal Audio from the corresponding drop-down menu. This may be used if you will be showing a video or audio clip during your presentation.
- Screen - If you would like to include your computer’s screen in the recording, confirm that the correct area is selected here. YuJa can use one or multiple monitors, or you can select a specific area of the screen. The captured area will be visible on the right.
- When you are done with the setup, click the red START button to begin recording. There will be a three second countdown, then your recording will begin.
- After you click START, you may minimize the YuJa window and start your presentation. As you are recording, you will see your controls in the bottom-right corner of your screen. They will give you the option to pause or stop your recording. You can also open the YuJa Software Station window by clicking the YuJa icon in your taskbar, then use the controls there to pause or stop. When you’re done with your presentation, you can end the recording session two ways:
- YuJa Application - Maximize the YuJa Software Capture window and click FINISH.
- Mini Action Bar - Look for the controls in the bottom-right corner of your screen and click the black square.
- IMPORTANT: When you stop recording, YuJa will prompt you to save or delete the file. Click SAVE, and the video will upload to your account's media folder. YuJa will begin to process the recording — you will receive an email when that is complete, and a second email when auto-captioning is done. This process may take several minutes depending on the size of the recording. After the video has been processed, it will be available in your YuJa media folder (and in the previously selected media channel, if you chose one). NOTE: If you only used the SAVE option, the video hasn't been posted to Blackboard yet! You will need to do that manually using the next steps.
- To share the video you can copy/paste its URL into Blackboard -or- you can add the video using Blackboard's YuJa tool (below). Navigate back to the UND YuJa CIM Tool in your Blackboard course using the steps above. This time, don’t click 'Record'. Instead, scroll down and look for the video you just recorded; after it has finished processing, the video will appear in the 'Choose Media' section. Click on the desired video to select it (this will outline it in dark blue). Then click Insert Content.
Note: If you are using a Mac, and you don't see the Insert Content button (in the bottom-right corner of the page), make sure you're scrolling down using both scroll bars. There are two, one inside the other, so it is easy to miss the outer-most scroll bar. If it's not visible, hover over the area on the right edge of the window and scroll to make it appear -or- change your settings to always display scroll bars: Apple menu > System Preferences > General > Show scroll bars > Always.
- After inserting the video, the next step will depend on your role in Blackboard:
- Instructors will see a success message, and will be returned to the main course content area. The YuJa video will appear in the course content area you selected at the beginning of the process.
- Students will be returned to the text editor page. You may choose to add more videos or text, then click 'Submit' to send the video/assignment to your instructor.
- The video will now be available to students/the instructor.
