YuJa: How to Download Videos & Other Media

In addition to playing and sharing videos, YuJa now allows viewers to download media to their own device! The video's owner can enable 'Allow Viewers to Download in Media Player' in the video settings, then a link to save its source file (MP4 for videos) will be available to anyone who can see the video. This is a great option for students to download course content for later review, because the media will be accessible for them to play any time – even without an internet connection.

Please note that the download option is disabled by default for all media in YuJa. If you are the video's owner (i.e. you created or uploaded the original file) and you want to allow downloads of this file, you must manually make this option available for others in each video's settings. Please see the instructions for instructors / content owners to enable downloads for students / viewers: individual videos -or- all videos in the course. Once enabled, the download link will be available for both viewers and content owners in multiple locations: In the media player, in the media info menu, and additionally as a bulk download option for content owners.

This article demonstrates how to download videos and other media files one (or a few) at a time, but media owners also have the ability to bulk download (save multiple files simultaneously), which is a great option for backing up all of your course content quickly and easily. Please see the following instructions for an overview of the different file download options. You can also view the Downloading Media video.

Download from the Media Player (for Students)

This option is available for viewers (anyone who can watch the video) not just content owners. Navigate to the video you would like to download. You may follow a link from your Blackboard course directly to the video, or find the video in your course's shared YuJa channel or folder. Click the link or the video link or thumbnail to open it in YuJa's media player. If media is available for download, you will see the Download Media option under Settings (gear icon) in the media player. If the Download Media option isn't available, contact the media's owner and ask them to make it available for a specific video or for all of the videos in the course (using options in their settings).

  1. Click the gear icon to open the Settings Menu.
  2. Select Download Media.A screenshot of a video playing in the YuJa media player, with a red arrow pointing from the settings (gear) icon to the 'DOWNLOAD MEDIA' link (in a pop-up menu).
  3. You will then be able to select how you would like to download the content. Choose either:
    • Audio-Only Content - Download just the audio (like a podcast).
    • Audio and Video Content - Download the video with audio, as it appears in the media player.A screenshot of YuJa > 'Request Media Download' menu, where you can : Select 'Audio-Only Content' or 'Audio and Video Content'.
  4. For recordings with more than one video stream, you will need to decide which feed you would like to set as the main/larger screen. The other feed will appear as a small thumbnail in the corner of the video. It is recommended that you select the feed containing the presentation/notes, as this can be difficult to read in thumbnail format.
    • Example: when downloading a recording of a classroom lecture, where one stream is a shot of the instructor and the other stream is a screen capture of the presentation slides, you may wish to select the presentation slides as the Primary stream to help to preserve the text's legibility.
A screenshot of YuJa > 'Request Media Download' menu, where you can select 'Audio-Only Content' or 'Audio and Video Content', then select the desired main stream, and enter an email to receive the download link.
  5. Enter the email address to which the download link should be sent, and click the Request Media button. Depending on the video's settings, either: your download will begin -or- you will receive an email shortly with a link to download the media file in the format you selected.
  6. Content Creators may attach additional resources to their YuJa videos, like a PowerPoint file containing the presentation's slides. Please see YuJa's help page for more information about how you can download any files that are associated with the video, like notes, resources, and transcripts.

Download From the Manage Media Menu > More...

This option is available to media owners (users who uploaded or created the file). Navigate to the folder containing the video you would like to download. You may follow a link from your Blackboard course, or find the video in your course's shared YuJa channel or folder.

  1. Hover over the video's thumbnail to bring up its menu options, and click More… to open the video's Manage Media menu.A screenshot of YuJa > folder browser, where you can hover over the video thumbnail and click 'More…' to open the 'Manage Media' menu.
  2. In the Manage Media window, select Downloads from the menu on the left. This will bring up the download options menu.A screenshot of YuJa > 'Manage Media' menu, where you can click 'Downloads' (in the menu on the left), then select a file type to download.
  3. You can select the file format you would like to download the media in. Different options may be available, depending on the media type, so you may be able to select from the following:
    • Download option 1: Select Audio-Only Content (like a podcast) -or- Audio and Video Content (video with sound, as it appears in the media player), then click Request Media to download. Then you may choose to save the video as separate files -or- as a single file. For separate files, each video stream will be saved to it's own file (one with the webcam feed and microphone audio, and one with the desktop/screencapture and internal computer sound). For the single file option, the video streams will be combined into one file. You may select which video feed you would like to occupy the larger/main part of the display – this will be your Primary Stream. The other, unselected stream will still be visible as a smaller, picture-in-picture window in the corner of the primary display.
    • Download option 2: Choose from other file types, such as Download media (MP4), Download original (the video's original file type – if created in YuJa, multiple streams of MP4 video may be available, or if the file was originally imported from elsewhere, it may be a different file type like MOV), Download SCORM 1.2 (a file package for use with the SCORM content player tool in Blackboard Original or Ultra), etc.
    • Additional options may be available, depending on the type of media you are working with.

Download Multiple Files at Once

This option is available to viewers and media owners . Navigate to the folder containing the video you would like to download. You may follow a link from your Blackboard course, or find the video in your course's shared YuJa channel or folder.

  1. Click and drag to select one (or more) of the video thumbnails -or- click …MORE ACTIONS, then click SELECT ALL from the drop-down menu.A screenshot of YuJa: Click and drag to select multiple items, or click 'MORE ACTIONS' menu then click 'SELECT ALL' to select every item.
  2. The selected videos will be surrounded by a thin black box. From the …MORE ACTIONS drop-down, select BULK DOWNLOAD to open the Download Request window.
A screenshot of YuJa: Click 'MORE ACTIONS' menu, then select 'BULK DOWNLOAD'.
  3. A) In the Download Request window, check the boxes next to the videos you would like to download, or...
    B) Click Select and choose multiple items at once; either all media or according to type/file format.
    C) Then click Request Media to initiate file processing for download. and YuJa will process the files into a downloadable format. Once the files are ready, you will receive an email with a link to download them.A screenshot of YuJa: Select the videos you would like to download (individually using checkboxes, or checking the box at the top to select all) then click 'Request Media'
  4. For recordings with more than one video stream, you have two additional choices: download the streams as separate video files, or combine each video with multiple streams into a single video file.
    • Separate files - Each stream from each video will be saved to it's own file: one with the webcam feed and microphone audio, and one with the desktop/screencapture and internal computer sound.
    • Single (combined) file - The streams will be overlaid in one video file, and the main display will be selected automatically. You may select which one you would like to occupy the larger/main part of the display – this will be your Primary Stream. The other, unselected stream will still be visible as a smaller, picture-in-picture window in the corner of the primary display.

Download to a Mobile Device

You can also download videos and other media directly to your phone or tablet! Just download and install the YuJa app (available for iOS and Android) and you can save videos to watch later, even when you don't have an Internet connection. For more information about how to use the app to download media to your mobile device, please see the help page for iOS or Android. To minimize cellular data use, you can change the settings to only download when connected to wifi.

You can download the app for Windows/Mac here. Please see YuJa's help page for information about downloadingUpda resources, notes, and other associated content.
