Enable Honorlock & Add to Exam in Blackboard Original

These instructions only apply to Blackboard Original courses. If your course uses Blackboard Ultra, please see Honorlock's help page for instructions. If you are not sure which instructions to follow, please see the 'Determine your course view' section of Bb's Getting Started page for examples.

Overview

Honorlock has been selected to replace ProctorU as UND's official proctoring service. Honorlock provides online proctoring that does not require users to install a special app or visit a website; instead, it uses a browser extension in Chrome. Honorlock also integrates with Blackboard, including both Original and Ultra course sites, so instructors can add a proctoring requirement to any Blackboard-based exam directly from its settings page, without leaving their course site. Similarly, students may begin any Honorlock proctored exam by clicking on the exam link in Blackboard — the proctoring process will begin automatically. Honorlock uses a combination of AI and live proctoring, so students can start their exams at any time, with no need to schedule a session. Recordings of the sessions will be available to the instructor in their Honorlock dashboard.

How to Use Honorlock for Any Blackboard Exam

Please see the instructions below or watch our video demonstration for more information about using Honorlock in your Blackboard Original course.

  1. Use Chrome with the Honorlock browser extension
  2. Enable Honorlock in your Blackboard course(s)
  3. Enable and configure Honorlock on any Blackboard exam's Settings page

Install the Honorlock Browser Extension for Chrome

This step will only need to be done once. After the extension has been installed, you must use Chrome as your browser to manage any future Honorlock-enabled exams.

  1. Open the Chrome internet browser. If Chrome is not available on your computer, you can download it for free from Google. Locate the file in your Downloads folder, click on it, and follow the on-screen instructions to install the application. This should also add Chrome links on your computer's desktop and/or taskbar — just click to run the application.
  2. Using the Chrome internet browser, download the Honorlock plugin. On that page: Check the box to acknowledge the terms and conditions, click Add Extension, and follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. The Honorlock icon will appear in Chrome's top menu bar (you may need to click the puzzle-piece icon to see it). You do not need to click on it — just confirm that it is installed.

Enable Honorlock in Your Blackboard Original Course

Instructors must enable the Honorlock integration in their course before it can be used for exams. To enable the integration, simply add a link to the Honorlock proctoring dashboard. Instructors may use this dashboard to view a list of exams where the proctoring requirement has been added, and to view recordings of students' proctoring sessions. After this link has been created, the Honorlock proctoring menu will appear on your test settings page. You will need to follow the steps in this section in every course where you would like to use Honorlock.

  1. To enable Honorlock for the first time, log in to Blackboard at https://blackboard.und.edu and open the desired course. In the course menu on the left, open the area where you would like your Honorlock dashboard link to appear. Note: This link will only be used by the instructor to manage the course's proctoring settings, so you can place it anywhere you prefer. Students will not need to access it.A screenshot of a Blackboard Original course site: The left menu bar is marked '1' and circled in red, the 'Build Content' menu item is marked '2' with a red arrow, and in its drop-down menu, the 'Honorlock Exam List' item is marked '3' with a red arrow.
  2. On the desired page, click the Build Content menu.
  3. From the drop-down menu, select Honorlock Exam List.
  4. On the next page, you can name the link. Set 'Permit Users to View this Content' to 'No' to hide it from students.A screenshot of a Blackboard course's 'Create Honorlock Exam List' page: The 'Name' field is filled in with 'Honorlock Dashboard' and circled in red. Next to the option, 'Permit Users to View this Content', a red arrow points at 'No'. In the bottom-right, the 'Submit' button is also marked with a red arrow.
  5. The Honorlock dashboard link should appear at the bottom of the course content page. You may click it at any time to manage the exams where Honorlock has been enabled, or to view the recordings created during students' proctoring sessions.A screenshot of a Blackboard Original course site's content page. Enable Honorlock for an Exam

Now that Honorlock is enabled in your course, you can set the proctoring requirement for individual exams. When this test setting is turned on, students will only be able to access the exam via the Chrome browser with the Honorlock extension. When they click the exam's link in Blackboard, the proctoring process will begin automatically. To add Honorlock to any exam that was created in Blackboard, please follow the instructions below. Note: Honorlock proctoring is only available for Blackboard-based exams. Assessments that link out to other sites (like those from a publisher) are not compatible with Honorlock at this time.

  1. Inside of your Blackboard course's content area, locate the exam where you would like to enable Honorlock. Click the grey arrow to its right, and from drop-down menu, select Edit the Test Options.A screenshot of a Blackboard Original course site's content page, with a test listed as the second item. Next to the test's title, a red arrow extends from the test's settings button over to its drop-down menu, where 'Edit the Test Options' is selected.
  2. On the 'Test Options' page, ensure that you have set the exam's display after, display until, and due date. These settings are required in order to use Honorlock with the exam.
  3. Continuing on the 'Test Options' page, scroll down to the section labeled 'Honorlock', and click the blue button to enable Honorlock proctoring for this exam.A screenshot of a Blackboard course's 'Test Settings' page: Under the Honorlock sub-heading, a red arrow points to the 'Click to Enable' (status) button.
  4. This will expand the Honorlock menu, where you can configure your exam's proctoring settings. Set an email to receive notifications (optional). Then you may locate the setting you would like to enable, and click on its box to select it. A blue checkbox will appear to indicate that the option has been turned on in this exam. You may click on the box again to deselect/disable that option.
  5. Continuing in the Honorlock menu, scroll down to 'Test Taker Guidelines'. Here, you can specify what is/isn't allowed during the exam. This section (and the 'Additional Instructions' section) will be visible to test takers at the beginning of their exam, and it will be used by Honorlock's proctors to determine which activities are permitted during the assessment.
  6. In the 'Assessment Accommodations' section, you may include notes for the proctors regarding any additional instructions or accommodations that will apply to specific students. This section will not be visible to test takers. Note: Only accommodations related to proctoring or authentication (like test taker photo, ID verification, or room scan) should be listed here — accommodations concerning exam availability, time extensions, number of attempts, and extended due dates should be managed in Blackboard's test or user settings. Please see Honorlock's help page for more information about accommodations.
  7. In the final section,  'Assessment Visibility', it is recommended that you use the default setting: 'No, use the dates on the assignment to determine test taker view'. This will prevent problems and confusion about exam availability.
  8. At the bottom of the Honorlock section, click Save to confirm your settings changes, and be sure to click Submit (in the bottom-right corner of the page) to ensure that all of the exam settings save/sync.
  9. Now the test should be ready to go! You may wish to share the following links with students to help them get started — they are applicable to both Blackboard Original and Blackboard Ultra courses:

Students can start an exam at any time without the need to schedule time with a proctor. When the student begins their exam, the Honorlock/Blackboard integration will automatically input the exam password (hidden from the student). Honorlock actively monitors the live proctoring session and creates a recording that instructors may review later.
