Important Note: Honorlock offers an additional visual authentication step, which may be enabled by instructors. Previously, this step was called 'Room Scan', and it required the student to pick up their device and use their webcam to record a video of the surrounding room. Now, a new option is available: Workplace Scan. This is different in that the student will be prompted to take a single, wide-angle photograph of their workplace, instead.
Starting September 1, 2026, Honorlock will be moving from 'Room Scan' (video) to 'Workspace Scan' (photo) for increased exam integrity. However, UND will continue to have Room Scan as an additional option until

UND has also enabled the
Honorlock Mobile app for smartphones (not compatible with iPad). This app allows students to use their phone's camera to complete the Workplace Scan, and the same phone can serve as a secondary webcam during the test session. If students cannot install the app, or if they do not have a smartphone, other options are available; the Workplace Scan can be done from their phone's browser, and/or they can use a regular USB webcam for the secondary camera. The Honorlock online exam-proctoring platform uses 'Live Pop-in' technology, which combines AI (Artificial Intelligence) with live remote proctors. Students may start an exam at any time, without the need to schedule time with a proctor. When the student begins their exam, the Honorlock/Blackboard integration will automatically input the exam password (which remains hidden from the student). During the exam, Honorlock will monitor and create a recording of the live proctoring session that instructors may review later. If Honorlock’s AI identifies potential exam integrity issues, an Honorlock proctor will check in and monitor the session more closely. If necessary, the proctor will join the session and ask the student to remove all unpermitted resources, or to stop the prohibited behavior.
A few things to note:
- Honorlock is available in Blackboard Ultra courses. UND's contract is for an unlimited number of exams.
- Honorlock uses a Chrome extension that students must install and use within the Google Chrome browser for Honorlock to work properly.
- Instructors should not edit or add their own exam access code:
- Honorlock will automatically add an access code, which will be stored securely in their system. Then, when the student joins the exam using Honorlock, the access code will be entered automatically. This way, the access code functions to prevent the student from accessing the exam without Honorlock.
- EXCEPTION: Third-party exams do require instructors to add a password. Please see the third-party exam instructions for more information.
