Using Respondus LockDown Browser & YuJa Proctoring Simultaneously for Blackboard Exams

Respondus LockDown Browser is a secure custom web browser that locks down the testing environment within Blackboard; test-takers are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. Instructors may opt to add exceptions (e.g., allow printing or access to a certain web page). When an assessment is started, students are locked into it until they submit for grading. It's compatible with Mac and Windows.

YuJa Exam Proctoring uses screen capture and webcam recording to ensure the security of student exams taken from remote locations. YuJa's Proctor Recorder also ensures that the recording is only securely allocated to a centralized instructor folder, which will avoid distribution of the exam recording by the student. It is also compatible with Mac and Windows.

Student Instructions

If you are required to use LockDown Browser concurrently with YuJa Proctoring for your exam, please follow these steps:

  • Please disable the ProctorU and/or Proctorio browser extentions before opening Respondus LockDown Browser.

Preparing for Your Exam
Plan ahead and have everything installed before the day of your exam (available for Mac and PC):

  1. Make sure you have installed the YuJa software station.
  2. Download the Respondus LockDown Browser install file, then open it. This will initiate the installation - just follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Optional: Familiarize yourself with YuJa Proctoring and Respondus LockDown Browser. If you haven't taken an exam in Blackboard before, you can take a practice quiz in the UND Student Resource Course (a non-graded course that all students are enrolled in). Simply log in to Blackboard, find the student resource course under My Courses, then click Taking Tests (in the course menu on the left). Scroll down to find the practice quiz.

Taking Your Exam
These steps must be performed in the following order:

  1. Start an exam proctoring session with YuJa (using Chrome/Firefox); these steps will begin the recording of your screen and webcam.
    • Using your regular browser (Chrome or Firefox), navigate to your Blackboard course. Click any link to YuJa, then click Create Recording (top center of the screen) and select Start an exam proctoring session from the drop-down menu. Select your course from the second drop-down menu, then click START PROCTORING.
    • This will open the YuJa recording software on your desktop - you may now close your Chrome/Firefox window. In YuJa, check the audio/video inputs, take a picture of your ID, then click START. Once you get the recording started, you may minimize the YuJa window and it will continue recording your screen and webcam from the background. Please see our Knowledge Base article for more information.
  2. Next, open LockDown Browser; this web browser prevents any non test-related activity on your computer. YuJa can run alongside this browser, but you may be prompted to close any other programs that you may have open.
  3. Within LockDown Browser, navigate to your course in Blackboard. You may now take your exam, then submit it whenever you're ready.
  4. Once your exam has been submitted successfully, you may close LockDown Browser. It will confirm that you want to exit - click yes.
  5. End your YuJa Proctoring session by clicking the red/square stop icon in the YuJa toolbar. It will confirm that you want to finish this proctor session - click yes. The recording of your exam session will now upload to your instructor's folder - don't close the window until the upload is complete.

Information for Instructors

If you would like students to use LockDown Browser and YuJa Proctoring simultaneously for a Blackboard exam, please see the following:

  • Faculty can access the LockDown Browser tool in the Blackboard > Course Tools menu, where they can mandate use of the browser for a specific test. You can find more information about enabling LockDown browser for your exam in this Knowledge Base article. NOTE: You don't need to use the Respondus application to create your exam! LockDown browser is a different tool offered by the same company, and may be used for taking almost any Blackboard exam.
  • YuJa Proctoring can be enabled at the course-level. For instructions, please see this walk-through.
  • You may wish to copy/paste or link to these instructions in Blackboard, for students to review and prepare. You can also test your exam settings yourself using student preview.
