Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom web browser that is compatible with Mac and Windows. It locks down the testing environment within Blackboard, so test-takers are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. When an assessment is started, students are locked into it until they submit for grading.
Notes:
If you are required to use LockDown Browser for your exam, you must disable the ProctorU and/or Proctorio browser extensions before opening Respondus LockDown Browser.
Some exams require the use of YuJa Proctoring (webcam and screen monitoring software)
in addition to Respondus LockDown Browser. If that is a requirement for your exam, please see
this article about using both applications simultaneously. For regular exams without the camera requirement, you may proceed to the next section.
Prepare for Your Exam
Install Respondus LockDown Browser before the day of your exam:
- Download the Respondus LockDown Browser install file for Mac or PC – make sure you download the correct file type for your operating system (see the Version section of that page to confirm compatibility).
- Once the download is complete, open the file to initiate the installation - just follow the on-screen instructions.

Take Your Exam
The steps must be performed in the following order:
- Ensure that you have followed the steps above to install Respondus LockDown Browser on your computer.
- Close any other programs that are running, including other browsers like Chrome or Firefox.
- Open/run Respondus LockDown Browser: locate the icon on your desktop or Start menu, and double click it to open. You may be prompted to close any other processes that you may have missed before Respondus will run.
- In the LockDown Browser window: log in to Blackboard.
- Still within LockDown Browser: navigate to your course, take your exam, and submit it when you're done.
- Once your exam has been submitted successfully, you may close LockDown Browser. It will confirm that you want to exit - click yes.
