Get started with Microsoft TEAMS

The benefits of using TEAMS

Microsoft TEAMS has several advantages. First, and probably most importantly, all of your commonly used communication and collaboration tools are conveniently packaged to work together seamlessly. TEAMS replaces Skype for Business, SharePoint, shared drives and Zoom meetings. It allows you to do all of that in just one place and organized for your multiple groups and projects. As an added bonus, TEAMS is available on all your devices any time making real time collaboration super easy.

Microsoft TEAMS can replace many separate applications into one, super-app.

  • Skype for Business - All your contacts from Skype for Business are already located in TEAMS.
  • Shared department drives - Require VPN for remote access, TEAMS uses OneDrive for Business to store department files and can be "mapped" to show on your computer.
  • Personal drives - All the Microsoft apps are intergrated to work together making file storage and sharing easier.
  • Google Docs - Much like Google Docs, TEAMS lets you collaborate with team members in real time using Word, Excel, etc.
  • Zoom - TEAMS has audio calling, video calling, and screen sharing comparable to Zoom meetings integrated right into the TEAMS app.

Microsoft TEAMS is a collaboration app that helps your team stay organized and have conversations—all in one place. Here's a quick look at the left hand side of Teams.

  • Teams - Find channels to belong to or create your own. Inside channels you can hold on-the-spot meetings, have conversations, and share files.

  • Meetings - See everything you’ve got lined up for the day or week. Or, schedule a meeting. This calendar syncs with your Outlook calendar.

  • Calls - In some cases, if your organization has it set up, you can call anyone from TEAMS, even if they’re not using TEAMS.

  • Activity - Catch up on all your unread messages, @mentions, replies, and more.

Use the command box at the top to search for specific items or people, take quick actions, and launch apps.

Example of channels

Channels are where the work actually gets done—where text, audio, and video conversations open to the whole team happen, where files are shared, and where apps are added.

While channel conversations are public, chats are just between you and someone else (or a group of people). Think of them like instant messages in Skype for Business or other messaging apps.
