What is Windows 11?

Launched on October 5, 2021, Windows 11 is the latest major iteration of Microsoft’s operating system. This release heralds a suite of new features, security enhancements, productivity tools, and performance upgrades designed to enhance the user experience.

What are the differences between Windows 11 and Windows 10?

Windows 11 offers a redesigned user interface. Most users will notice a refreshed Start menu and “snap layouts” to better organize all your open Windows. Microsoft touts improved touch controls, integrated widgets, virtual desktops, security enhancements, and improved performance.

How do I know if my computer is compatible with Windows 11?

Using MDM software, UIT has already compiled a list of devices that are not compatible with Windows 11. UIT will begin notifying affected departments of incompatible machines so departments can begin planning replacements.

Microsoft has published an article outlining the system requirements for operating Windows 11. This information can be accessed through the following link: Windows 11 Hardware Requirements.

What happens if I don’t upgrade my computer to Windows 11 by October 14th, 2025?

The computer will not meet UND’s security standards and will be removed from the network. Please plan accordingly and make sure your device is upgraded to Windows 11 by this date. If your device is not compatible with Windows 11, make sure you work with your department's tech coordinator or administrative assistant to get a device ordered that is Windows 11 compatible.

How do I upgrade to Windows 11?

UIT will be making Windows 11 upgrade an option within Software Center > Operating Systems. Simply click the button and the upgrade will proceed.

You may also utilize the Windows 11 upgrade tool to perform the upgrade. This tool will be quicker than the option through Software Center.

The Windows 11 upgrade tool can be downloaded here: Windows 11 Upgrade.

Does UIT have a set of instructions for how to upgrade to Windows 11 on my own?

Yes. Please click the link here to be taken to that knowledge base article.

How long will a Windows 11 upgrade take?

On average, it takes approximately 45 minutes to download over a wired connection and it takes about 15-20 minutes to restart and install the upgrade.

Will my existing applications work with Windows 11?

Most applications that are compatible with Windows 10 should be compatible with Windows 11. If you are unsure, you can always check the software vendor's website to determine whether it will be compatible or not. If there is a question as to whether the software is compatible or not, you can always contact UIT chat support (UIT Chat Support) or submit a ticket (Report an Issue with Software or Applications) to inquire further.

Can I still use Microsoft Office with Windows 11?

Yes. Microsoft Office is compatible with Windows 11.

Do I need to backup my data before upgrading to Windows 11?

It is always a good idea to make sure your data is backed up before an operating system upgrade or a clean installation. While the chance is slim, there is always potential for a problem to occur. Before upgrading, do ensure you are making use of OneDrive to backup all of your documents. UND employees have 1 TB of OneDrive storage available to them.

If your documents are already backed up to OneDrive, the upgrade will simply upgrade your system to Windows 11 and leave your existing file structure in place.

Once I upgrade, will other devices, such as my keyboard, printer, etc., continue to work?

Once your device is upgraded to Windows 11, please check Windows updates. It will determine if there are any new driver updates for your attached devices. There may be a possibility that some of your attached devices are older, and the vendor does not offer drivers that are compatible with Windows 11.

I don’t like the current layout of Windows 11. The Start Menu is in the center, not the left. Can I customize the Windows 11 Interface to my liking?

Yes. Windows 11 offers many options to personalize your taskbar and make the Windows 11 experience feel familiar to you.

What if I encounter problems after upgrading?

UIT has already been testing Windows 11 upgrades on internal systems and has already been taking notes on any issues encountered and workarounds to ensure a smooth transition. If you encounter a problem, please reach out to UIT via chat support (UIT Chat Support) or submit a ticket (Report an Issue with Software or Applications).

Will my existing shortcuts transfer to Windows 11?

Your shortcuts should be unaffected.

What’s the timeline for the transition?

UIT will begin upgrading classroom and lab computers this summer (June 2024). UIT will plan on having all these machines upgraded by Fall Semester (Aug. 26, 2024).

Any new computers that are ordered and issued in June 2024 will have Windows 11 installed.

Any computers that are brought in for service, or need a reimage, will be upgraded to Windows 11.

We strongly encourage employees to utilize either Software Center or the Windows upgrade tool for the upgrade. For those who may feel apprehensive about this process, please reach out to UIT for assistance.

Please start planning! While October 14th, 2025 is over a year away, it will be here sooner than you think.

I am a student at UND. Do I have to upgrade to Windows 11 on my personal device before October 14, 2025?

UIT strongly encourages our student body to only use Operating Systems on their devices that receive security updates.

I have a special situation (such as research) in which I need to continue to use older equipment that is not Windows 11 compatible. Do I have any options?

We recognize that there may be unique circumstances where Windows 11 might not be feasible. If you find yourself in such a situation, we kindly ask you to submit a ticket with UIT. Please provide as much detail as possible regarding your requirements and the reason(s) why Windows 11 isn't suitable for you. You can submit your request for review through the following link: Submit an End-point Exemption Request.

I have other questions on the Windows 11 upgrade process that weren’t listed here.

Please reach out to UIT at our Chat Support or you can also submit a ticket with your question.
