Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom web browser that locks down the testing environment within Blackboard; test-takers are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. When an assessment is started, students are locked into it until they submit for grading. It is compatible with Mac and Windows.
If you are required to use LockDown Browser for your exam, please follow these steps:
- Please disable the ProctorU and/or Proctorio browser extentions before opening Respondus LockDown Browser.
Prepare for Your Exam
Install Respondus LockDown Browser before the day of your exam:
- Download the Respondus LockDown Browser install file for Mac or PC – make sure you download the correct file type for your operating system (see the Version section of that page to confirm compatibility). Once the download is complete, open the file to initiate the installation - just follow the on-screen instructions.

Note: Some exams require the use of YuJa Proctoring (webcam and screen monitoring software)
in addition to Respondus LockDown Browser. If that is a requirement for your exam, please see
this article about using both applications simultaneously. For regular exams without the camera requirement, you may proceed to the next section.
Take Your Exam
The steps must be performed in the following order:
- Close any other programs you have running, then open LockDown Browser; this web browser prevents any non test-related activity on your computer. You may be prompted to close any other processes that you may have missed before Respondus will open.
- Within LockDown Browser, log in to Blackboard, navigate to your course, take your exam, and submit it whenever you're ready.
- Once your exam has been submitted successfully, you may close LockDown Browser. It will confirm that you want to exit - click yes.
