There is a split second delay between when a computer begins to play an audio file and when the computer's audio is active. Many of the Praat audio clips are shorter than the time required by the computer to activate its audio output.
The issue can be fixed within the Praat program by changing the preference for sound playing to have a 0.7s or greater value for the Silence before setting. Praat > Preferences > Sound playing preferences.
- 0.7s appears to be the minimal value to use to avoid cutting off part of the sound file being played.
- This issue is typically reported by the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) during their summer sessions.
