The Maker Space is available to all UND students, faculty, and staff with a valid U Card. The lab is operated by University Information Technology (UIT) and is located in the lower level of the Chester Fritz Library, room 130A. Any student, faculty, or staff member on campus can use the lab’s equipment by submitting a design.
The Maker Space is operated by students of UND Tech Support with oversight from full-time staff.
Equipment
The Maker Space has several different types of equipment for various fabrication needs. These include:
- Ultimaker S5 3D Printer, compatible with 2.8mm PLA, PVA, PETG, PET, and ABS
- Ultimaker 3 3D Printer, compatible with 2.8mm PLA, PVA, PETG, PET, and ABS
- FormLabs Form 2 Resin 3D Printer
- GlowForge Laser Cutter
- Cricut Maker Vinyl Cutter
- Bantam Tools PCB Mill/Precision CNC
- Bob's E3 CNC Drill
All equipment can be used free of charge if you decide to bring your own material. UIT offers Ultimaker PLA (Most common), PVA, and ABS plastics and FormLabs Resin for a small charge for your model size. All other equipment will require you to bring your own materials for use.
Submit a Design
Those that would like to 3D print should submit a design request. A valid UND U Card is required at drop-off and pick-up. Designs should be submitted as a .STL or .3mf file for 3D printing, or .SVG, .G or .GCODE for CNC/Laser designs. UND Tech Support staff will assist with printing options such as:
- Printer choice (Ultimaker 3 or Formlabs Form 2)
- Printing color (dependent on printer choice)
- Infill
- Print resolution (draft, normal, fine)
- Purpose of the part (personal, research, class project)
Policies
The UND Maker Space must be used exclusively for lawful, non-commercial purposes and in compliance with all UND policies. The equipment in the lab may only be used for lawful purposes and may not be used to create anything or content that violates or may violate any law or third-party right, including, without limitation, any copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, moral right, privacy right, right of publicity, or any other intellectual property or proprietary right. If you have not collected your request within 14 days, you will be charged for the material used to print the request and the item(s) become the property of the university to be discarded at our discretion.
The person who placed the request must present their U Card when picking up models. Any objects not picked up in 14 days will be deemed abandoned.
Users will receive their models directly from the printer. UND Tech Support will not provide any post-processing of models.
Pricing
Those providing filaments can 3D print free of charge. An extra 10 grams of material is required to allow calibrations for the filament.
- Filaments must be compatible with one of our printers. Carefully read the "Printable Materials" section of each printer under the Equipment heading.
There is a $2 minimum charge for 3D printing to cover the cost of supplies if users are not providing their own materials. Prices for plastic filaments on hand start at 7 cents/gram.
Completed prints and projects may be paid for by exact change, credit/debit card, or interdepartmental fund number.

Where can I find objects to print?
The following websites have ready-to-print 3D model designs:
How can I create my own models?
There is a variety of modeling software available. This list provides only a few for beginners:
- 123D Design - Is a free, powerful, yet simple 3D creation and editing tool from Autodesk. (Recommended)
- Sketchup - Users will need to make sure to add the Sketchup STL from the Extension Warehouse.
- Tinkercad - Start designing in seconds with this browser-based 3D design platform.
- Autodesk Fusion 360 Education Edition - Those with .edu emails can sign up for the full version of Autodesk Fusion 360. (Advanced)
What if you don't have the filament I need?
- Those providing filaments can 3D print free of charge. An extra 10 grams of material is required to allow calibrations for the filament.
- Filaments must be compatible with one of our printers (2.8mm). Carefully read the "Printable Materials" section of each printer under the Equipment heading.
