UND UIT Computer Configuration

Remote Desktop Support

UIT uses the BeyondTrust (Bomgar) representative console. We do not install the BeyondTrust client on faculty and staff computers. We install the BeyondTrust client in the classroom and lab computers for users to contact support but do not remote into them unless a user starts the session or during after hours maintenance. If a remote session is necessary for a faculty/staff computer, the user is either directed to a website where they select the representative they are working with or is sent a link to download the client. The client runs out of the folder it is downloaded to and is no longer active after the session is ended. By design, the file should self-remove after the session is complete, but if a file remains in the downloads folder, it would be session specific and could not be used to reconnect.

Maintenance

UIT installs Microsoft Endpoint Management client (also known as SCCM client) and the Apple Management software known as JAMF on all UND computers. These clients provide a software catalog (Software Center) and allow the installation of software and operating system updates. UIT does not use SCCM or JAMF for remote access.

Security

UIT installs Palo Alto’s Cortex XDR for its endpoint protection and program threat behavior analysis. Spirion is installed to identify and protect restricted data (Social Security Numbers, Credit Card, etc). Spirion is installed by default but requires the user to launch the program and initiate a scan. The finding is reported only to the user.

Asset Management

UIT installs Sassafras KeyAccess client, which collects computer specifications such as remaining drive space, currently installed software, age of device/warranty status, and last user. Sassafras also provides aggregated usage data for programs; for example, last semester, the labs had X hours of SPSS 28 usage, Y hours of AutoCAD usage, and Z hours of Mathematica.
