YuJa allows instructors and students to record videos using the YuJa Software Capture application, the recording software needed to record their screen and access webcam and audio content. Recordings can be created either directly in YuJa or from a Blackboard Ultra course.
A Note on YuJa Software Capture:
- This application must be installed to record videos.
- The application is free and available for Windows and Mac.
- If the software is not installed, YuJa will prompt you to download it before recording can begin.

Access YuJa
Yuja can be accessed in 2 ways: through Blackboard Ultra or directly through the YuJa website. See the Get Started in YuJa help article for more information on how to access YuJa.
Note: First time users must log in to YuJa using the link in their Blackboard Ultra course—this will create their YuJa account with the appropriate permissions and storage for their role. After that, users can sign in to the YuJa site directly or navigate to it through Blackboard.
Create a Recording in YuJa
This option is recommended if you wish to record content outside of Blackboard. This video can always be shared at a later date and time.
- Navigate to und.yuja.com and login (Note: Depending on the way you access the site, you may need to sign in using SSO).
- At the top of the YuJa home page, select Create Recording.
- Select Launch Software Capture.
- If the YuJa Software Capture application is not installed, select Download to install it before continuing.
- The YuJa recording software will open automatically (you may need to approve the redirect).
Create a Recording in Blackboard Ultra
This option is recommended if you intend for the recording to be embedded in the course content or submitted as part of an assignment.
As an Instructor
- Open your Blackboard Ultra course.
- Navigate to the content area where you want your video to appear.
- Select the purple (+) icon.
- Select Content Market.
- From the Content Market page, select either:
- UND YuJa: adds a link to the overall YuJa page. You can create a YuJa video from this page, but the link will not point to it directly.
- UND YuJa CIM Tool (recommended): adds a link directly to a YuJa video. You may select an existing video, or create a new one at this time.
- On the YuJa page, select Create Recording.
- Click Launch Software Capture (or Download if prompted).
IMPORTANT: The YuJa CIM Tool will simply link the video. If you would like to embed the video, so it's visible/playable on your course page, you must add it inside of any text editor box, using the + menu > Content Market.
As a Student
- Open the assignment in Blackboard.
- Locate the text editor box on the submission page.
- Select the + icon in the editor menu.
- Choose Content Market.
- Select UND YuJa CIM Tool.
- Select Create Recording.
- Click Launch Software Capture (or Download if prompted).
Set Up the YuJa Recorder
Once the YuJa Software Capture application launches (either from YuJa or in Blackboard), a new window will appear where you can: edit your recording settings, select the desired input devices (camera, microphone, etc.), see a preview of the video streams, and check the audio levels. (Note: you may be prompted to allow access to your webcam, microphone, or screen.)
- Title (recommended): Enter a descriptive title for the recording. Videos can be renamed later from the Manage Media area.
- Publish to Course Channel (optional): Share the video directly to a Blackboard course channel.
- By default, only instructors can publish to course channels.
- If not published, the video is saved privately to your YuJa media folder.
- Folder Location (recommended): Choose where the recording will be stored in YuJa. If no folder is selected, the video is saved to your default folder.
- Video: Select a webcam and/or document camera.
- Audio: Choose the appropriate microphone and confirm audio levels using the meter. To capture system audio, enable YuJa Internal Audio if needed.
- Screen: Select one or more monitors or choose a specific screen area to record.
Preview the window on the right side of the recorder screen to confirm your selections.
Start and Stop a Recording
Select Start to begin recording. There will be a three-second countdown before the recording begins.
While you are recording, you will continue to see your controls in the Mini Action Bar (in the bottom-right corner of your screen). Use it to pause or stop the recording. You can also click on the YuJa icon to reopen the Software Capture window at any time.
To stop recording, you can select Finish from the Software Capture window or select the black square (stop) on the Mini Action Bar.
Save and Process a Recording
When you stop the recording, YuJa will prompt you to choose one of the following options:
- Post Now: Publishes the video to the selected course channel (if chosen earlier)
- Save: Saves the recording to your YuJa Media folder
- Delete: Discards the recording
After saving:
- YuJa processes the video automatically; you will receive an email when processing is complete.
- A second email is sent when auto-captioning finishes.
Note: Processing time varies depending on video length and file size.
Add or Share a Recording in Blackboard
If the recording was saved but not published to Blackboard, you will need to manually share the recording. You can do so by copying and pasting it's URL into Blackboard or, you can add it using the YuJa CIM tool.
- Navigate to your Blackboard course.
- Open UND YuJa CIM Tool again.
- Scroll to the Choose Media section.
- Select the processed video.
- Click Insert Content.
Mac users: If the Insert Content button is not visible in the bottom-right corner of the page, make sure you're scrolling down using both scroll bars. There are two, one inside the other, so it is easy to miss the outer-most scroll bar. If it's not visible, hover over the area on the right edge of the window and scroll to make it appear -or- change your settings to always display scroll bars: Apple menu > System Preferences > General > Show scroll bars > Always.
Final Steps
- Instructors: the video will appear in the selected course content area.
- Students: add any additional text, then select Submit to complete your assignment.
