Windows Spotlight is a feature available in both Windows 10 and Windows 11 that automatically displays new images on your lock screen and desktop background every day. These images are generally sourced from Bing, and the lock screen may also include helpful tips, fun facts, or information related to the image. Windows Spotlight is designed for users who want a dynamic, rotating slideshow without the need to manage it manually.
However, some UND employees have reported that Microsoft appears to be enabling this feature on their devices with some finding it distracting. If you prefer not to use Windows Spotlight, this Knowledge Base article provides instructions on how to disable it.
To fully disable Windows Spotlight, you will need to adjust two settings in the Windows Settings application: Lock Screen and Background. The steps are the same for both Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the following instructions use Windows 11 as an example.
Disable Windows Spotlight on the Desktop Background:
- In Windows 11, open the Settings application and go to Personalization > Background.
- In the drop-down menu where "Windows Spotlight" is selected, switch to another option, such as Picture.
