Blackboard Tests: Set Default Point Value for New Questions

Before you add content to your Blackboard test, you may wish to set a default point value that will automatically be applied to all new questions — if you change the default point value after adding questions, the old questions will retain the previous value. Only new questions will have the new value. Note: this feature is not available for questions in pools and surveys.

How to Change the Default Point Value

To change the default point value for new questions added to any specific test, you must access that test's Question Settings menu. This can be done from the control panel, or directly from your course's content area:

From the Control Panel:

  1. In the Course Management menu (in the bottom-left), click Course Tools to expand that section, then select Tests, Surveys, and Pools.
  2. On the Tests, Surveys, and Pools page, select Tests.
  3. On the Tests page, locate the test in the list. Next to the test's name, click the grey circle/arrow to open the drop-down menu and select Edit.
  4. On the Test Canvas page, click the Question Settings link (in the top-right).
  5. On the Test Question Settings page, under Scoring, check the box next to 'Specify default points when creating questions' to enable this feature. Then enter the desired point value in the 'Default point value' box. You may also use the subsequent settings to set the value (manually-added or default) when adding new questions.Screenshot of a Blackboard course's 'Question Settings' menu, with a default point value for new questions selected.
  6. When you are finished, click Submit to save your changes.

From the Course Content Area

  1. Locate the test in your course's content area (where students would go to access it). Next to the test's name, click the grey circle/arrow to open the drop-down menu > select Edit the Test.
  2. On the Test Canvas page, click the Question Settings link (in the top-right).
  3. On the Test Question Settings page, under Scoring, check the box next to 'Specify default points when creating questions' to enable this feature. Then enter the desired point value in the 'Default point value' box. 4. When you are finished, click Submit to save your changes.
