Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility VPN

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. Using UND's VPN convinces your computer that you are using the UND network for your work and therefore allows you to access shared drives. UND uses the Cisco AnyConnect client.

Install on a UND computer

Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility (VPN) can be installed through the UND Software Center if you are on campus. Installing apps this way does not require admin credentials. If you are working remotely from off campus, follow the directions below for non-UND-owned computers

  1. You can find the Software Center app by going into the Applications folder and double-clicking the icon.Screenshot of Applications Folder in Mac. Software Center application is highlighted.
  2. Under the All tab, select the app you want to install. Select Install. The program will begin the installation. Alternatively, if you click on a software that you have already installed, you can choose to Reinstall or uninstall it.

Windows

  1. Select the Windows icon in the lower left corner of your desktop.
  2. Type software center to search, then select the Software Center application.

  1. Select the software you need in the list of available software under the Applications tab.

  1. Select Install. The program will begin the installation. Alternatively, if you click on a software that you have already installed, you can choose to uninstall it.

  1. The status will change to Installed when the installation is complete. You can check this by clicking on the Installation Status tab.
  2. To see which software applications are installed on your machine, select on the Installation status tab.

Install on a non-UND computer

  1. Go to undvpn.und.edu and log in with your NDUS.identifier and password—this is the same information used to log into Campus Connection and Blackboard.
  2. Click Start AnyConnect to go to the download page for the VPN Client.

  1. Your system will be automatically detected. The site will choose the best download based on your device and operating system. Click the download button to download the installer.

  1. Follow the installer prompts to complete installation.
  2. Open the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client and select Add VPN Connection.
  3. Fill in the prompts as follows and when done, click Save in the top right corner.
  • Description: at your discretion (it is a name to distinguish it from other VPN connections on your device). We used UND for this demonstration.
  • Server Address: undvpn.und.edu
  • Advanced: Leave blank, no options need to be adjusted
  1. You should now see the newly created connection under Choose a connection…. Turn the AnyConnect VPN to ON using the toggle in the top left corner.

  2. If you receive the Untrusted VPN Server! Message, click Change Settings.

  3. Under Advanced Settings, toggle Block Untrusted VPN to OFF. After authenticating into VPN, you may wish to turn this back on.

  4. Attempt to toggle AnyConnect VPN to ON again. Toggling AnyConnect VPN to ON should bring up the Authentication prompt.

Log in to VPN

  1. Open the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.
  2. The login windows will appear. If prompted, enter undvpn.und.edu for the VPN server.
  • If you are logging into HRMS Employee Self Service to print W-2s, type: ndusvpn.ndus.edu for the server instead.

Enter undvpn.und.edu

  1.  Select your group from the drop down menu, usually UND
  2. Enter your NDUS credentials and authenticate with Duo MFA.

Username: This is your NDUS username. It is usually firstname.lastname. The same information you use to log into Campus Connection and HRMS.

Password: This is your NDUS password. The same information you use to log into Campus Connection and HRMS.

Duo Passcode: Type PUSH, PHONE, or SMS to authenticate with Duo MFA.

Enter your NDUS credentials and authenticate with Duo MFA.

  1. Click OK to connect. The status will then change to Connected to.

Ways to authenticate in VPN:

 If you have a Yubikey Token, you can click into the passcode entry field and tap the Yubikey to generate and submit a passcode.

PUSH

Push a login request to your phone (if you have Duo Mobile installed and activated on your iOS, Android, or Windows Phone device). Just review the request and tap Approve to log in.

PHONE

Authenticate via phone call back.

SMS

Get a new batch of SMS passcodes. Your login attempt will fail — log in again with one of your new passcodes.

Troubleshoot VPN

 

MAC OS: VPN will open and close automatically

Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility (VPN) requires at least 10.13 (High Sierra) to work.


 

Windows users unable to install VPN and/or VPN not running correctly after installation

  1. Download and run the Microsoft fix-it tool.
  2. Click Accept when presented with the terms page.
  3. Click Detect problems and let me select the fixes to apply.
  4. Click Uninstalling and a list of applications will appear.
  5. Scroll to applications beginning with Cisco AnyConnect.
  6. Select one of the applications beginning with Cisco AnyConnect, then click Next.
  7. Click Yes, try uninstall.
  8. On the Diagnosis is complete screen, select all fixes (if not already selected), then click Next.
  9. On the Troubleshooting is complete screen, click Next.
  10. On the Did this fix your problem?, select Yes, this fixed the issue and click Next.
  11. Click Close.
    • Note: If there is more than one application starting with Cisco AnyConnect, repeat this process for all applications.
  12. Reinstall the Cisco AnyConnect client for Windows.

 

Windows VPN will not start. Error "Cisco AnyConnect failed to start. It is already running in another user's session."

Reboot (restart) the computer. This will log out all of the other users who are logged into the computer.  You'll then be able to log back in and connect.
