Cisco VPN

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. Using UND's VPN allows for a direct and fully insulated connection to UND's network for your work and therefore allows you to access shared drives. UND uses the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client.

UND Computer 

Mac Windows

Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility (VPN) can be installed through the UND Software Center if you are on campus. Installing apps this way does not require admin credentials. If you are working remotely from off campus, follow the directions below for non-UND-owned computers

 

Mac

You can find the Software Center app by going into the Applications folder and double-clicking the icon.Screenshot of Applications Folder in Mac. Software Center application is highlighted.

Under the All tab, select the app you want to install. Select Install. The program will begin the installation. Alternatively, if you click on a software that you have already installed, you can choose to Reinstall or uninstall it.

Windows

  1. Select the Windows icon in the lower left corner of your desktop.
  2. Type software center to search, then select the Software Center application.

  1. Select the software you need in the list of available software under the Applications tab.

  1. Select Install. The program will begin the installation. Alternatively, if you click on a software that you have already installed, you can choose to uninstall it.

  1. The status will change to Installed when the installation is complete. You can check this by clicking on the Installation Status tab.
  2. To see which software applications are installed on your machine, select on the Installation status tab.

Non-UND Computer (Personal Computers)

  1. Go to undvpn.und.edu and Enter your NDUS credentials and authenticate with Duo MFA (For more info view this section).
    1. Username: This is your NDUS username. It is usually firstname.lastname. The same information you use to log into Campus Connection and HRMS.

      Password: This is your NDUS password. The same information you use to log into Campus Connection and HRMS.

      Duo Passcode/2nd Password: Type PUSH, PHONE, or SMS to authenticate with Duo MFA.

      Warning! Typing your account password instead of PUSH, PHONE, or SMS will cause your login to fail. Repeated failed login attempts will lock your DUO account from further logins.
  2. Click Start AnyConnect to go to the download page for the VPN Client.

  1. Your system will be automatically detected. The site will choose the best download based on your device and operating system. Click the download button to download the installer.

  1. Follow the installer prompts to complete installation.
  2. Open the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client and add undvpn.und.edu next to the connect button.

  1. Click Connect to be prompted to log in to the VPN.

Login to VPN

  1. Open the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.
  2. The login windows will appear. If prompted, enter undvpn.und.edu for the VPN server.
  • If you are logging into HRMS Employee Self Service to print W-2s, type: ndusvpn.ndus.edu for the server instead.

Enter undvpn.und.edu

  1.  Select your group from the drop down menu, usually UND
  2. Enter your NDUS credentials and authenticate with Duo MFA.

Username: This is your NDUS username. It is usually firstname.lastname. The same information you use to log into Campus Connection and HRMS.

Password: This is your NDUS password. The same information you use to log into Campus Connection and HRMS.

Duo Passcode/2nd Password: Type PUSH, PHONE, or SMS to authenticate with Duo MFA.

  1. Click OK to connect. The status will then change to Connected to.

Chromebooks (Installation)

  1. Click the Launcher icon on the Google Chromebook desktop. Then select the Web Store.
  2. Using the search bar, search for Cisco AnyConnect 
  3. Click the Add to Chrome button to install the Cisco AnyConnect client (If prompted, click Add).display:
  4. Once the Cisco AnyConnect app is installed, you will be able to search for AnyConnect within your applications. Click on the AnyConnect icon to configure the VPN client.
  5. The VPN client will go through an initialization stage. The process may take 2-3 minutes to complete.
  6. Once available, click the Add New Connection to configure the VPN client.
  7. Enter UND VPN in the "Name" box and undvpn.und.edu in the "Server Address" box, then click Save Changes.
  8. You have completed the VPN setup, now you need to log in.

Chromebooks (Login)

  1. Right click the WiFi icon in the bottom right of the taskbar, then select VPN Disconnected.

  2. Select UND VPN.

  3. Enter your NDUS credentials and authenticate with Duo MFA.

Username: This is your NDUS username. It is usually firstname.lastname. The same information you use to log into Campus Connection and HRMS.

Password: This is your NDUS password. The same information you use to log into Campus Connection and HRMS.

Duo Passcode/2nd Password: Type PUSH, PHONE, or SMS to authenticate with Duo MFA.

Ways to authenticate in VPN:

 If you have a Yubikey Token, you can click into the passcode entry field and tap the Yubikey to generate and submit a passcode.
Type in the Duo Passcode/Second Password field...
To authenticate...

PUSH

Push a login request to your phone (if you have Duo Mobile installed and activated on your iOS, Android, or Windows Phone device). Just review the request and tap Approve to log in.

PHONE

Authenticate via phone call back.

SMS

Get a new batch of SMS passcodes. Your login attempt will fail — log in again with one of your new passcodes.

In order to improve online security for remote users connecting to the VPN, we will be implementing Duo MFA for those who are logging in. There will now be a second password field which will be the DUO Passcode.
