Adobe Flash Player will reach end of life on December 31, 2020

What does this mean?

End of life means that an application will no longer be support or updated by the vendor. After December 31, 2020 all versions of Adobe Flash will be unauthorized. Software that is no longer being supported by its vendor becomes a security risk and is not allowed to be used on UND devices.

We expect a minimal impact on UND systems as Flash has been replaced over the years by alternatives like HTML5 which does not require any additional installations. Modern applications therefore should not be impacted. However, applications 10 years or older may be effected.

What applications are NOT effected?

All modern applications, and most UND applications will not be effected. These include:

  • Adobe Products
  • Blackboard
  • Citrix
  • Cisco AnyConnect (VPN)
  • DocuSign
  • Duo MFA
  • LiquidFiles
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, OneDrive for Business)
  • Microsoft TEAMS
  • Perceptive Content
  • ProctorU
  • TeamDynamix
  • YuJa (Some Adobe Presenter content was added to YuJa and those files will NOT work)
  • Zoom

If an application is not listed and you would like to know if it is effected, please contact us.

What applications may be effected?

Older applications may or may not be effected. It is impossible to provide a comprehensive list of applications that may be effected. If you are ever prompted to install Adobe Flash Player, that application most likely is. Please contact UIT for assistance.

One known application is Adobe Presenter. This application can create a PDF file that looks just like any other PDF file, but actually has recorded sound like presentation narration. These files will no longer work.

Adobe Presenter can also export as SWF (in Zip packages) and HTML5. SWF files will not work, but HTML5 will.

To determine whether or not a recording was created with Adobe Presenter, look for the Adobe Presenter splash screen that appears briefly at the beginning of the video and the slide navigation menu on the right.

This is an example of an Adobe Presenter file.

Faculty should work closely with Instructional Designers at TTaDA for assistance addressing this content.
